One unfortunate byproduct of high copper prices over the last couple of years is theft. Copper thieves target anything and everything containing copper, including electronics, electric wiring, and appliances like air conditioners.
For the past few summers it’s been too common to see a story about a home, a business, or even a church having their air conditioner stolen or gutted by copper thieves. These thieves often work at night and will even steal air conditioners while people are in a home or building.
If you’ve heard about copper thefts in your city or neighborhood, there are some steps you can take to protect your air conditioning unit.
Lock gates
It’s always a good idea to keep your doors and gates locked at night or when you’re not at home. If your air conditioner is in a fenced-in backyard, make sure gates are locked and fences are secure enough to keep unwanted visitors out.
Improve lighting
Good lighting gives thieves fewer places to hide by removing the cover of darkness. Consider adding a light or two to your air conditioner area just like you would a back door or porch.
Add cameras
While security cameras may not be practical for a typical home, they’re a good idea for businesses and churches. Not only will they help to reduce insurance costs, but they are a great deterrent to theft and can help catch criminals should anything happen.
Invest in a cage
Lockable metal cages are widely available for home and commercial air conditioners. These will make tampering with or stealing a unit much more difficult.
